Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Jets
Overall
B
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
A passer of the future in Mendoza, and a B, for the Jets. The Jets clearly saw something nobody else did in Kamran James, taking him 72 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced.
Whatever Fernando Mendoza becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. A whole weekend of picks and cornerback is somehow still a want.
The Downs pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick2
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In Round 1, Pick 2 they get the face of the franchise. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick16
Rnd1
Caleb Downs
In slot 16 they get a downhill hitter at safety, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick33
Rnd2
KC Concepcion
KC Concepcion at the 33rd overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick44
Rnd2
Anthony Hill Jr.
They read the board right and Anthony Hill Jr. was the payoff at the Round 2 slot. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick103
Rnd4
Boubacar Traore
Boubacar Traore at the 103rd pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick175
Rnd5
Taylen Green
Taylen Green at pick No. 175 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the quarterback. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick179
Rnd5
Patrick Payton
Value said wait; Patrick Payton in Round 5, Pick 40 says they were not listening. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick193
Rnd6
Princewill Umanmielen
They reached into another round for Princewill Umanmielen, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick207
Rnd6
Pat Coogan
Pat Coogan in pick 207 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It fills a real need, too.
Pick211
Rnd6
Da'Shawn Womack
Da'Shawn Womack at the 211th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick218
Rnd7
Kamran James
Kamran James in the Round 7 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick242
Rnd7
Keaten Wade
This one needs a full-page explanation: Keaten Wade in No. 242, miles early. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
