Draft Grade — Texans
Overall D-
ValueB- NeedB+ TradesF FutureC-
The phones sank the Texans this weekend: D-.

The Texans treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending Round 4, Pick 28 on T.J. Sanders a full 52 spots early. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D- is the result.

The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. The Burton steal is the beam this whole class leans on. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.

In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.

Pick Analysis
Pick28 Rnd1 Rome Odunze
Rome Odunze is a better player than Round 1, Pick 28 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick31 Rnd1 T'Vondre Sweat
In the 31st overall pick they get a load in the middle at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick35 Rnd2 Edgerrin Cooper
No drama and no debate, Edgerrin Cooper went about where he belonged in pick 35. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick49 Rnd2 Jonah Elliss
Jonah Elliss in the 49th pick is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick90 Rnd3 Jermaine Burton
Jermaine Burton at slot 90 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick91 Rnd3 Zak Zinter
Zak Zinter at the Round 3 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
Pick93 Rnd3 Ennis Rakestraw Jr.
A tidy bit of business in No. 93, where Ennis Rakestraw Jr. graded well above the range. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick94 Rnd3 Dominick Puni
Dominick Puni in the 94th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick103 Rnd4 James Williams
They reached into another round for James Williams, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick117 Rnd4 Cade Stover
They left a pile of value on the table to take Cade Stover this early at the Round 4 slot. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick128 Rnd4 T.J. Sanders
A big swing on T.J. Sanders at the 128th overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick154 Rnd5 Tahj Brooks
Value said wait; Tahj Brooks in pick No. 154 says they were not listening. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick234 Rnd7 Sam Hartman
This one needs a full-page explanation: Sam Hartman in slot 234, miles early. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick238 Rnd7 Xavier Thomas
Xavier Thomas at Round 7, Pick 18 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
