The Bears drew a line under the quarterback search with McCarthy: B. The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Bears spent their marquee pick on J.J. McCarthy, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
Every board in the league had Wiley lower, and that gap is the story. A whole weekend of picks and running back is somehow still a want.
Good work on the whole, with running back the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick17
Rnd1
Taliese Fuaga
In the 17th overall pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front. A real need, handled.
Pick18
Rnd1
J.J. McCarthy
In pick 18 they get a franchise quarterback, even if it was a touch early. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick21
Rnd1
Jackson Powers-Johnson
In slot 21 they get a long-term starter on the line, though they paid up to get him.
Pick23
Rnd1
Adonai Mitchell
In Round 1, Pick 23 they get a difference-maker at receiver, reach and all. A real need, handled.
Pick56
Rnd2
Michael Hall Jr.
A big swing on Michael Hall Jr. at the Round 2 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick75
Rnd3
Kiran Amegadjie
The board had Kiran Amegadjie higher than the 75th pick, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick100
Rnd3
Jalen McMillan
Jalen McMillan in No. 100 is fair value, right on his grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick112
Rnd4
Mohamed Kamara
They reached a country mile for Mohamed Kamara at pick No. 112, and the board is aghast. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick122
Rnd4
Tommy Eichenberg
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Tommy Eichenberg well ahead of where he belonged. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick139
Rnd5
Jaylin Simpson
Jaylin Simpson at pick No. 139 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick168
Rnd5
Isaiah Williams
A reach on Isaiah Williams in pick 168; the board had better options right there. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick170
Rnd5
Jared Wiley
They reached into another round for Jared Wiley, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick222
Rnd7
KT Leveston
Value said wait; KT Leveston in the Round 7 slot says they were not listening. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
