Nobody dealt better than the Steelers this weekend: B. The real work happened on the phones. The Steelers fleeced their trade partners, turning their picks into a noticeably bigger pile than they started with.
It is not that Mahogany is a bad player; it is that the Steelers had louder needs to answer first. They are betting Hicks proves the room right and everyone else wrong.
The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Legette.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick Analysis
Pick26
Rnd1
Nate Wiggins
In slot 26 they get a lockdown presence outside at a price that makes it sweeter. A real need, handled.
Pick52
Rnd2
Xavier Legette
A quiet steal in the Round 2 slot: Xavier Legette for less than the market said. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick76
Rnd3
Zach Frazier
They let Zach Frazier come to them and pounced at No. 76. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick84
Rnd3
Christian Mahogany
A surprising call. With quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots still to address, they spent Round 3, Pick 20 on Christian Mahogany, an offensive lineman they were not short of.
Pick89
Rnd3
Jaden Hicks
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jaden Hicks this early at pick No. 89. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick114
Rnd4
Mohamed Kamara
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Mohamed Kamara. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick120
Rnd4
Khyree Jackson
The board had Khyree Jackson higher than pick 120, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick146
Rnd5
Edefuan Ulofoshio
Edefuan Ulofoshio in the 146th overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It fills a real need, too.
Pick198
Rnd6
Christian Jones
They liked Christian Jones enough to skip the value, taking him in Round 6, Pick 23. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick238
Rnd7
David Ugwoegbu
A conviction pick on David Ugwoegbu at pick No. 238 that the board grades a round light. It does not line up with the team's obvious holes.
