Larceny in slot 163 lands the Steelers a B, Phillips and all. The Steelers spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Jordan Phillips, the No. 109 name on the board, in Round 5, Pick 24.
For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. With quarterback, edge rusher and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on offensive lineman is the choice that costs them. The dealing nudged the ledger their way without much fuss.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick Analysis
Pick16
Rnd1
Tetairoa McMillan
In the Round 1 slot they get a matchup problem out wide. A real need, handled.
Pick64
Rnd2
Jihaad Campbell
The board fumbled Jihaad Campbell all the way to the 64th overall pick, and they scooped it up. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick83
Rnd3
Donovan Jackson
No edge and no loss on Donovan Jackson in No. 83; it is a wash and a sensible one. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick96
Rnd3
Maxwell Hairston
Steal is underselling it; Maxwell Hairston at slot 96 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick122
Rnd4
Ozzy Trapilo
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Ozzy Trapilo adds an offensive lineman and leaves quarterback, edge rusher and other spots untouched.
Pick129
Rnd4
Sebastian Castro
Taking Sebastian Castro in Round 4, Pick 28 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick163
Rnd5
Jordan Phillips
Jordan Phillips at pick No. 163 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick166
Rnd5
Jackson Slater
Circle this one: Jackson Slater at the 166th pick is a fall that decides a draft. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick247
Rnd7
Jamon Dumas-Johnson
You do not let a linebacker like Jamon Dumas-Johnson reach pick 247 and blink. They did not. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
