Larceny in No. 231 lands the Steelers a C, Hancock and all. When a board-topper like Jordan Hancock slides to the Round 7 slot, you do not overthink it, and the Steelers did not.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. They are betting Gregory proves the room right and everyone else wrong. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
So much rides on Jalon Walker that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick Analysis
Pick21
Rnd1
Jalon Walker
In the 21st overall pick they get a sideline-to-sideline linebacker. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick52
Rnd2
Aireontae Ersery
Aireontae Ersery at the Round 2 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick61
Rnd2
TreVeyon Henderson
TreVeyon Henderson in No. 61 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick83
Rnd3
Jayden Higgins
Jayden Higgins in slot 83 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick122
Rnd4
Kyle McCord
No edge and no loss on Kyle McCord in the 122nd pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick163
Rnd5
Jeffrey Bassa
Jeffrey Bassa in pick 163 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick199
Rnd6
Cobee Bryant
They barely believed it either: Cobee Bryant still on the board at pick No. 199. It fills a real need, too.
Pick225
Rnd7
Cam Jackson
Fair-plus on Cam Jackson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick231
Rnd7
Jordan Hancock
A safety of that caliber at the 231st overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick238
Rnd7
Trevor Etienne
Taking Trevor Etienne in No. 238 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick247
Rnd7
LaJohntay Wester
They will replay LaJohntay Wester at the 247th pick for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick254
Rnd7
Eric Gregory
Eric Gregory at pick No. 254 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
