Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall C
ValueB NeedB TradesF FutureB-
The Steelers cashed the board's mistake on Starks: C.

The phones were a trap the Steelers kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal. For now it grades a C, with the swing picks left to settle the rest.

Getting Starks where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The cost of the Skattebo reach is exactly the players who went right after him.

The verdict is a shrug for now, with the swing picks left to write the real ending.

Pick Analysis
Pick25 Rnd1 Emeka Egbuka
In pick 25 they get a weapon on the perimeter. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick50 Rnd2 Malaki Starks
You do not let a safety like Malaki Starks reach the 50th overall pick and blink. They did not. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick83 Rnd3 Cam Skattebo
A reach for Cam Skattebo in the 83rd pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick86 Rnd3 Deone Walker
They paid sticker price for Deone Walker in No. 86, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick89 Rnd3 Jalen Milroe
Jalen Milroe at pick No. 89 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick123 Rnd4 Cobee Bryant
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Cobee Bryant. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick156 Rnd5 Nick Nash
A tidy little value on Nick Nash in the Round 5 slot, a step better than break-even. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick185 Rnd6 JJ Pegues
They took JJ Pegues at par in Round 6, Pick 9, which is nothing to complain about. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick199 Rnd6 Caleb Rogers
By-the-book stuff, Caleb Rogers at the 199th pick squarely in line with his ranking. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick229 Rnd7 Jamon Dumas-Johnson
The board had cheaper options than Jamon Dumas-Johnson at slot 229, and it noticed. The roster fit checks out.
