Draft Grade — Texans
Overall B+
ValueB+ NeedB TradesA+ FutureB-
The Texans cashed the board's mistake on Chambliss: B+.

The value of the weekend has a name and a slot: Trinidad Chambliss, pick 216, roughly 34 picks past where he belonged. The bottom line is a respectable B+.

The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

They will need Easter to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick Analysis
Pick22 Rnd1 Arvell Reese
In slot 22 they get a downhill thumper at linebacker, and a steal at that. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick37 Rnd2 Caleb Banks
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Caleb Banks at the 37th overall pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick56 Rnd2 Sonny Styles
Sonny Styles slipping to No. 56 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It fills a real need, too.
Pick66 Rnd3 Jake Slaughter
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Jake Slaughter in the 66th pick, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick108 Rnd4 Keon Sabb
Nice patience on Keon Sabb, who had no business lasting to pick No. 108. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick121 Rnd4 Monroe Freeling
By-the-book stuff, Monroe Freeling at the Round 4 slot squarely in line with his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick131 Rnd4 Chase Bisontis
They did well to land Chase Bisontis in pick 131, just ahead of his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick179 Rnd5 Darius Taylor
Darius Taylor at Round 5, Pick 39 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick216 Rnd7 Trinidad Chambliss
Somehow Trinidad Chambliss was still sitting there in the 216th pick, and they pounced on premier quarterback value. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick229 Rnd7 Shamar Easter
Shamar Easter in No. 229 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. The roster fit checks out.
Pick237 Rnd7 De'Zhaun Stribling
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on De'Zhaun Stribling. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick241 Rnd7 Nolan Rucci
They took Nolan Rucci at par in pick No. 241, which is nothing to complain about. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
