PhillyV DRAFTING FOR THEEagles

Draft Grade — Eagles

FutureB-
The Eagles lost the trade table, and the D- tells the story. There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Eagles started one anyway for Jay Higgins, 33 picks ahead of schedule. Put together, it is a D-.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. For all the activity, running back went untouched, which is hard to explain.
The Phillips steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick Analysis
Pick32
Rnd1
Tyler Warren
In No. 32 they get a security blanket over the middle at a price that makes it sweeter.
Pick64
Rnd2
Xavier Watts
Circle this one: Xavier Watts at the 64th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick82
Rnd3
Ashton Gillotte
Ashton Gillotte at pick 82 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick92
Rnd3
Tez Johnson
A premium they did not need to pay, Tez Johnson a notch or two before his time. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick96
Rnd3
David Walker
David Walker at Round 3, Pick 32 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick130
Rnd4
Jordan Phillips
Jordan Phillips at slot 130 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick134
Rnd4
Malachi Moore
Malachi Moore in slot 134 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick156
Rnd5
Willie Lampkin
A big swing on Willie Lampkin at No. 156, well ahead of any board in the building. The roster fit checks out.
Pick161
Rnd5
Tyler Shough
Tyler Shough in the 161st overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It fills a real need, too.
Pick164
Rnd5
Tommi Hill
A tidy little value on Tommi Hill in the 164th pick, a step better than break-even. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick165
Rnd5
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. at pick No. 165 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick168
Rnd5
Jay Higgins
Jay Higgins at pick 168 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick172
Rnd5
Jack Nelson
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jack Nelson. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick180
Rnd6
Oronde Gadsden II
They paid a round early for Oronde Gadsden II in Round 6, Pick 4, more than the board wanted. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick223
Rnd7
Carson Vinson
Carson Vinson at the 223rd overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A need, and now a little less of one.
