Popsyoda DRAFTING FOR THESteelers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall
B-
ValueB
NeedB-
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Steelers checked most of the boxes and earned a B-. Of all the ways to open, the Steelers chose the head-scratcher, spending the 52nd overall pick on Jackson Powers-Johnson with quarterback, safety and other spots still wide open. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. Barrett falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. The Gentry reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
JC Latham
In slot 20 they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Pick52
Rnd2
Jackson Powers-Johnson
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Jackson Powers-Johnson adds an offensive lineman and leaves quarterback, safety and other spots untouched.
Pick84
Rnd3
Braden Fiske
They took Braden Fiske at par in No. 84, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick119
Rnd4
Kris Abrams-Draine
Kris Abrams-Draine in the 119th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick120
Rnd4
Malik Washington
They paid sticker price for Malik Washington in Round 4, Pick 20, and that is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick198
Rnd6
Michael Barrett
A tidy bit of business in the 198th pick, where Michael Barrett graded well above the range. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick241
Rnd7
Eric Gentry
A reach for Eric Gentry in pick No. 241; a little patience would have been rewarded. A need, and now a little less of one.
