The 49ers cashed the board's mistake on Devonshire: B-. This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: M.J. Devonshire, the No. 182 name on the board, stolen at Round 6, Pick 39. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
The running back spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. They left with offensive lineman solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but running back.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Troy Fautanu
In pick No. 31 they get a building block for the line. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick63
Rnd2
Max Melton
Max Melton in pick 63 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick94
Rnd3
Christian Mahogany
Christian Mahogany at slot 94 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick98
Rnd3
Brenden Rice
Brenden Rice at No. 98 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick125
Rnd4
McKinnley Jackson
By-the-book stuff, McKinnley Jackson at the 125th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick132
Rnd4
Beaux Limmer
They read the board right and Beaux Limmer was the payoff at Round 4, Pick 32. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick176
Rnd6
Sione Vaki
A clean, defensible pick in the 176th pick with a little surplus value in Sione Vaki. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick209
Rnd6
Joe Milton III
They let Joe Milton III come to them and pounced at the Round 6 slot. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick214
Rnd6
M.J. Devonshire
M.J. Devonshire in the 214th overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick215
Rnd6
Jared Wiley
Jared Wiley in pick No. 215 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick249
Rnd7
Trevin Wallace
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Trevin Wallace in Round 7, Pick 29. A need, and now a little less of one.
