FutureB-
A respectable, level-headed haul for the Steelers: B. The rest of the league had time to spare on Daevin Hobbs; the Steelers did not wait, grabbing him 23 spots ahead at the 230th pick.
With edge rusher and tight end unsolved, spending premium capital on offensive lineman is the choice that costs them. The Robertson pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Quarterback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
Caleb Downs
In slot 14 they get a downhill hitter at safety at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick45
Rnd2
Nyck Harbor
A reach for Nyck Harbor in pick 45; a little patience would have been rewarded. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick78
Rnd3
LaNorris Sellers
LaNorris Sellers at No. 78 is money in the bank, a quarterback taken below his worth. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick96
Rnd3
Drew Shelton
No drama and no debate, Drew Shelton went about where he belonged in the Round 3 slot. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick99
Rnd3
Justice Haynes
Justice Haynes at the 99th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick113
Rnd4
Chris Johnson
They took Chris Johnson at par in pick No. 113, which is nothing to complain about. The roster fit checks out.
Pick132
Rnd4
Parker Brailsford
A surprising call. With edge rusher and tight end still to address, they spent No. 132 on Parker Brailsford, an offensive lineman they were not short of.
Pick133
Rnd4
Blake Miller
A want over a need in Round 4, Pick 33: Blake Miller adds an offensive lineman while edge rusher and tight end keeps waiting.
Pick154
Rnd5
Jacob Rodriguez
They paid a round early for Jacob Rodriguez in the 154th overall pick, more than the board wanted. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick213
Rnd6
Sawyer Robertson
A tidy bit of business in slot 213, where Sawyer Robertson graded well above the range. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick214
Rnd6
Isaiah Nwokobia
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Isaiah Nwokobia. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick229
Rnd7
James Smith
The board had cheaper options than James Smith at the 229th pick, and it noticed. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick230
Rnd7
Daevin Hobbs
A real head-scratcher, Daevin Hobbs in the Round 7 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
