Drane04 DRAFTING FOR THETexans

Draft Grade — Texans
Overall

FutureB-
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Texans to a D-. The Texans torched the value chart for Jared Wiley, taking him 79 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. The Smith pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with interior defensive lineman and quarterback still on the board. A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want.
The Milton pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, interior defensive lineman very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick23
Rnd1
Olumuyiwa Fashanu
In Round 1, Pick 23 they get a cornerstone up front, and a steal at that. A real need, handled.
Pick24
Rnd1
Chop Robinson
In pick 24 they get a bendy edge with upside at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick59
Rnd2
Cooper Beebe
Cooper Beebe at the Round 2 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick63
Rnd2
Xavier Worthy
By-the-book stuff, Xavier Worthy at the 63rd overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick64
Rnd2
Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
They took Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at par in slot 64, which is nothing to complain about. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick86
Rnd3
Trey Benson
Trey Benson at No. 86 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick94
Rnd3
Maason Smith
A want over a need in the Round 3 slot: Maason Smith adds a DT-EDGE while interior defensive lineman and quarterback keeps waiting.
Pick95
Rnd3
James Williams
James Williams at the 95th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick123
Rnd4
Johnny Wilson
No edge and no loss on Johnny Wilson in Round 4, Pick 23; it is a wash and a sensible one. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick124
Rnd4
Jarrian Jones
A reach on Jarrian Jones in No. 124; the board had better options right there. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick127
Rnd4
Jared Wiley
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jared Wiley. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick224
Rnd7
Kendall Milton
You do not let a running back like Kendall Milton reach pick No. 224 and blink. They did not. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick238
Rnd7
Marcellas Dial
A straight-up fair deal on Marcellas Dial at the 238th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick247
Rnd7
Tyrice Knight
Tyrice Knight at slot 247 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
