Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall D-
ValueC+ NeedB TradesF FutureB
The phones sank the Cowboys this weekend: D-.

The Khristian Boyd pick is the one that will follow the Cowboys into the fall. They took him 42 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so. The process wobbled, and the D- is where it lands.

The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. The Cowboys indulged a want in Boyd while a need in tight end and interior defensive lineman stayed open.

Brade falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.

Pick Analysis
Pick10 Rnd1 Dallas Turner
In pick No. 10 they get a premier pass rusher. More want than need.
Pick24 Rnd1 Graham Barton
In slot 24 they get a blindside protector at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick56 Rnd2 Patrick Paul
A conviction pick on Patrick Paul at Round 2, Pick 24 that the board grades a round light. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick72 Rnd3 Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at No. 72 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick96 Rnd3 Braelon Allen
A premium they did not need to pay, Braelon Allen a notch or two before his time. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick111 Rnd4 Johnny Wilson
The board had cheaper options than Johnny Wilson at pick 111, and it noticed. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick114 Rnd4 Caelen Carson
They will replay Caelen Carson at the 114th pick for years; that is how good the value is. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick135 Rnd4 Khristian Boyd
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Khristian Boyd adds an edge rusher and leaves tight end and interior defensive lineman untouched.
Pick174 Rnd5 Beau Brade
Beau Brade at the 174th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick216 Rnd6 Steele Chambers
They read the board right and Steele Chambers was the payoff at slot 216. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick233 Rnd7 Solomon Byrd
This one needs a full-page explanation: Solomon Byrd in No. 233, miles early. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick244 Rnd7 Austin Reed
They talked themselves into Austin Reed at pick 244, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
