Draft DRAFTING FOR THEPatriots

Draft Grade — Patriots

FutureB-
A solid, sensible weekend for the Patriots: B-. When the story of this class is written, it opens with J. Michael Sturdivant at Round 6, Pick 17, a reach of 86 spots that the board flatly disagrees with. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
The Rutledge value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Blake Miller
In pick No. 31 they get a plug-and-play piece up front, even if it was a touch early.
Pick63
Rnd2
Derrick Moore
By-the-book stuff, Derrick Moore at the 63rd overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick95
Rnd3
Eli Stowers
Circle this one: Eli Stowers at Round 3, Pick 31 is a fall that decides a draft. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick125
Rnd4
Keylan Rutledge
Keylan Rutledge at No. 125 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick131
Rnd4
Jalon Kilgore
Somehow Jalon Kilgore was still sitting there in the 131st pick, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick171
Rnd5
Red Murdock
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Red Murdock. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick191
Rnd6
Seth McGowan
Good price on Seth McGowan in the 191st pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick198
Rnd6
J. Michael Sturdivant
A swing that ignored the value entirely, J. Michael Sturdivant well ahead of where he belonged. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick202
Rnd6
VJ Payne
They took VJ Payne at par in pick No. 202, which is nothing to complain about. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick212
Rnd6
Justin Jefferson
Justin Jefferson in the 212th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick247
Rnd7
Deven Eastern
Value said wait; Deven Eastern in slot 247 says they were not listening. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
