Warren1 DRAFTING FOR THEPatriots
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
More right than wrong for the Patriots, and a B- to prove it. The Patriots clearly saw something nobody else did in Patrick Payton, taking him 37 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. They banked enough surplus on Davis to cover a lot of smaller sins. They went 7 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Chris Brazzell II
In the 31st overall pick they get a weapon on the perimeter at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick63
Rnd2
A.J. Haulcy
A quiet steal in No. 63: A.J. Haulcy for less than the market said. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick95
Rnd3
Jude Bowry
Value said wait; Jude Bowry in pick 95 says they were not listening. It fills a real need, too.
Pick125
Rnd4
Michael Trigg
Michael Trigg in the Round 4 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick131
Rnd4
Tacario Davis
Value with a capital V on Tacario Davis in Round 4, Pick 31, a genuine coup. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick169
Rnd5
Chase Roberts
A slide stopped in slot 169, with Chase Roberts worth more than the price. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick189
Rnd6
Zane Durant
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Zane Durant at pick No. 189. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick200
Rnd6
Charles Jagusah
No edge and no loss on Charles Jagusah in the 200th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. The roster fit checks out.
Pick207
Rnd6
Kaelon Black
They took Kaelon Black at par in the Round 6 slot, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick210
Rnd6
Patrick Payton
Patrick Payton at slot 210 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick247
Rnd7
Nick Barrett
Nick Barrett at Round 7, Pick 31 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
