Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B-
ValueB- NeedB+ TradesC FutureB-
A respectable, level-headed haul for the Patriots: B-.

The Braylan Shelby selection is the head-turner. The Patriots reached 38 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.

Stone at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. A small leak at the table, if not a fatal one.

Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.

Pick Analysis
Pick30 Rnd1 David Stone
In pick 30 they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick62 Rnd2 Nick Marsh
A conviction pick on Nick Marsh at the 62nd overall pick that the board grades a round light. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick94 Rnd3 Marcus Neal Jr.
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Marcus Neal Jr.. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick125 Rnd4 Wendell Gregory
A wild overpay on Wendell Gregory in Round 4, Pick 25, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick130 Rnd4 Xavier Lucas
Xavier Lucas at slot 130 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick168 Rnd5 Justice Haynes
A straight-up fair deal on Justice Haynes at the 168th pick, value and slot in agreement. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick169 Rnd5 Christian Alliegro
Christian Alliegro at pick 169 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick200 Rnd6 Benjamin Brahmer
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Benjamin Brahmer at the Round 6 slot. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick207 Rnd6 Braylan Shelby
Braylan Shelby at No. 207 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick209 Rnd6 Jehiem Oatis
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jehiem Oatis. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick239 Rnd7 Byrum Brown
They took Byrum Brown at par in pick No. 239, which is nothing to complain about. The roster fit checks out.
Pick241 Rnd7 Addison Nichols
Addison Nichols at slot 241 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick246 Rnd7 Xavier Scott
They talked themselves into Xavier Scott at Round 7, Pick 30, and the board did not agree. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
