The Patriots went off the board in a big way for Patrick Payton, 82 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another. A D+ that will need time and luck to look better.

They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. With interior defensive lineman and running back unsolved, spending premium capital on linebacker is the choice that costs them. The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer.

The Hurst pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
