Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B-
ValueC+ NeedB- TradesB FutureB-
A respectable, level-headed haul for the Patriots: B-.

Boards are made to be trusted, and the Patriots shredded theirs for Jalen Thompson. He came off 64 spots early, and the room will hear about it.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. The Rodriguez pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with interior defensive lineman, quarterback and other spots still on the board. The Reese steal is the beam this whole class leans on.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick Analysis
Pick30 Rnd1 Arvell Reese
Arvell Reese in pick 30 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick63 Rnd2 Malachi Fields
Malachi Fields in pick No. 63 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick94 Rnd3 Monroe Freeling
Monroe Freeling in the 94th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The roster fit checks out.
Pick96 Rnd3 Jacob Rodriguez
A want over a need in No. 96: Jacob Rodriguez adds a linebacker while interior defensive lineman, quarterback and other spots keeps waiting.
Pick126 Rnd4 Tacario Davis
Tacario Davis at slot 126 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick130 Rnd4 Bray Hubbard
They did well to land Bray Hubbard in the Round 4 slot, just ahead of his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick131 Rnd4 Parker Brailsford
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Parker Brailsford in the 131st pick. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick169 Rnd5 Josh Cuevas
Josh Cuevas at pick No. 169 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick190 Rnd6 Evan Stewart
A tidy little value on Evan Stewart in slot 190, a step better than break-even. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick201 Rnd6 Jalen Thompson
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jalen Thompson in the 201st overall pick, miles early. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick208 Rnd6 Trey Zuhn III
Trey Zuhn III in No. 208 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick210 Rnd6 Jerry Wilson
Jerry Wilson at Round 6, Pick 30 is a conviction pick that outran the value. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick228 Rnd7 J. Michael Sturdivant
They took J. Michael Sturdivant at par in the Round 7 slot, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick246 Rnd7 Jacobe Johnson
Jacobe Johnson in pick 246 is fair value, right on his grade. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
