Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall D+
ValueC+ NeedB- TradesF FutureB-
The phones sank the Patriots this weekend: D+.

There is conviction, and then there is this. The Patriots took Vincent Anthony Jr. a full 75 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. The math is unkind, and the D+ follows.

They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. Lew at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.

A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.

Pick Analysis
Pick31 Rnd1 Sonny Styles
In the Round 1 slot they get a sideline-to-sideline linebacker, and a steal at that. More want than need.
Pick63 Rnd2 Keith Abney II
A cornerback of that caliber at slot 63 is the definition of value, full stop. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick95 Rnd3 Connor Lew
Connor Lew in pick No. 95 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick99 Rnd3 Bryce Lance
Bryce Lance at the 99th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick121 Rnd4 Vincent Anthony Jr.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Vincent Anthony Jr.. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick125 Rnd4 DeMonte Capehart
A real head-scratcher, DeMonte Capehart in Round 4, Pick 25 is miles ahead of his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick131 Rnd4 Dametrious Crownover
Dametrious Crownover in pick No. 131 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick135 Rnd4 Davison Igbinosun
Davison Igbinosun is a better player than the Round 4 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick159 Rnd5 Tanner Koziol
Good price on Tanner Koziol in Round 5, Pick 21, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick169 Rnd5 Trey Moore
A wild overpay on Trey Moore in the 169th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick189 Rnd6 VJ Payne
They jumped the gun on VJ Payne, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick200 Rnd6 Taylen Green
Taylen Green at No. 200 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick207 Rnd6 Jeff Caldwell
A premium they did not need to pay, Jeff Caldwell a notch or two before his time. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick210 Rnd6 Zxavian Harris
They liked Zxavian Harris enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 210. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick213 Rnd6 Thaddeus Dixon
Thaddeus Dixon in Round 6, Pick 34 is fair value, right on his grade. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick214 Rnd6 Jeremiah Wright
No drama and no debate, Jeremiah Wright went about where he belonged in pick 214. It fills a real need, too.
Pick224 Rnd7 Tyler Onyedim
They left a pile of value on the table to take Tyler Onyedim this early at pick No. 224. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick226 Rnd7 Jimmy Rolder
Jimmy Rolder in No. 226 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick237 Rnd7 Adam Randall
Adam Randall in the 237th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick247 Rnd7 Wesley Williams
Wesley Williams at the Round 7 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
