FutureB
Nothing loud, just a tidy B- for the Patriots. The Shamar Porter pick is the one that will follow the Patriots into the fall. They took him 51 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Washington. That running back hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
They left with edge rusher solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Teitum Tuioti
In pick No. 31 they get a problem off the edge, reach and all. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick62
Rnd2
A'Mauri Washington
A'Mauri Washington at No. 62 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick94
Rnd3
Ashton Hampton
They reached a country mile for Ashton Hampton at slot 94, and the board is aghast. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick125
Rnd4
Earl Little Jr.
Taking Earl Little Jr. in Round 4, Pick 25 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick130
Rnd4
AJ Green
AJ Green in pick 130 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick168
Rnd5
Christian Alliegro
A real head-scratcher, Christian Alliegro in the 168th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick193
Rnd6
Donovan Jones
They went early on Donovan Jones in the 193rd pick, and the value did not follow. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick200
Rnd6
Elijah Rushing
Elijah Rushing in pick 200 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick207
Rnd6
John Mateer
A wild overpay on John Mateer in the 207th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The roster fit checks out.
Pick209
Rnd6
Shamar Porter
Shamar Porter at slot 209 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick246
Rnd7
D'Antre Robinson
A reach for D'Antre Robinson in No. 246; a little patience would have been rewarded. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick255
Rnd7
Jake Johnson
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jake Johnson this early at pick No. 255. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
