Larceny in the 209th overall pick lands the Patriots a B-, Mathews Jr. and all.

The Patriots spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Jermaine Mathews Jr., the No. 178 name on the board, in the Round 6 slot.

Reaching for Haynes left real value on the table behind him. Leaving tight end unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.

Pick Analysis
Pick24 Rnd1 Chris Cole
In slot 24 they get a three-down second-level presence. Need was not the driver here.
Pick55 Rnd2 Nick Marsh
Nick Marsh in pick No. 55 is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick86 Rnd3 Bray Hubbard
Bray Hubbard slid further than he should have, and Round 3, Pick 22 is lovely value for the safety. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick122 Rnd4 Evan Tengesdahl
Evan Tengesdahl in No. 122 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick162 Rnd5 Mateen Ibirogba
A conviction pick on Mateen Ibirogba at the Round 5 slot that the board grades a round light. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick185 Rnd6 Justice Haynes
They talked themselves into Justice Haynes at the 185th overall pick, and the board did not agree. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick209 Rnd6 Jermaine Mathews Jr.
Jermaine Mathews Jr. in pick 209 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick251 Rnd7 Maraad Watson
Maraad Watson in the 251st pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick257 Rnd7 Noah Fifita
No edge and no loss on Noah Fifita in the Round 7 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. The roster fit checks out.
