If confidence were a draft strategy, the Patriots would have aced it. Patrick Payton at the Round 6 slot is 40 spots clear of where he belonged.

They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain.

Getting Reese where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.

The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
