FutureD-
The steal of the weekend belongs to the Patriots and Ward: F. You build a draft on nights like this. Cam Ward had no business being available in slot 238, and the Patriots did the only sane thing and turned in the card. Little went right, and the F does not pretend otherwise.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring. The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.
They went 8 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
In short, a weekend the front office will want to forget in a hurry.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Travis Hunter
In pick No. 4 they get an island corner. More want than need.
Pick17
Rnd1
Abdul Carter
In the Round 1 slot they get a disruptor off the edge at a price that makes it sweeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick25
Rnd1
Ashton Jeanty
Ashton Jeanty at the 25th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick26
Rnd1
Armand Membou
In slot 26 they get a long-term starter on the line, and a steal at that. A real need, handled.
Pick46
Rnd2
Matthew Golden
Matthew Golden at Round 2, Pick 14 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick69
Rnd3
Nick Emmanwori
A safety of that caliber at pick 69 is the definition of value, full stop. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick106
Rnd4
Jalon Walker
Jalon Walker in the 106th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick110
Rnd4
Walter Nolen
Walter Nolen at No. 110 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick144
Rnd5
Colston Loveland
Colston Loveland in No. 144 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick171
Rnd5
Aireontae Ersery
The board fumbled Aireontae Ersery all the way to pick 171, and they scooped it up. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick186
Rnd6
Jahdae Barron
You do not let a cornerback like Jahdae Barron reach pick No. 186 and blink. They did not. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick193
Rnd6
Josaiah Stewart
Taking Josaiah Stewart in Round 6, Pick 17 is close to grand larceny; an edge rusher that good had no business lasting this long. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick213
Rnd6
T.J. Sanders
T.J. Sanders in the 213th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick220
Rnd7
Wyatt Milum
They will replay Wyatt Milum at slot 220 for years; that is how good the value is. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick238
Rnd7
Cam Ward
A top-tier quarterback at a bargain, Cam Ward in the Round 7 slot, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
Pick239
Rnd7
Quinshon Judkins
They barely believed it either: Quinshon Judkins still on the board at the 239th pick. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick247
Rnd7
Dylan Fairchild
Steal is underselling it; Dylan Fairchild at No. 247 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
