The Cowboys did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B-.

There is conviction, and then there is this. The Cowboys took Kalil Alexander a full 60 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. No fireworks, but a solid B-.

The Lawrence pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with cornerback, quarterback and other spots still on the board. Getting McAlister where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.

For all the activity, cornerback went untouched, which is hard to explain.

Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.

In the 12th overall pick they get an every-down engine for the run game, outstanding value to boot. A real need, handled.
Pick20 Rnd1 T.J. Parker
In the Round 1 slot they get a quarterback's worst nightmare. Need was not the driver here.
Pick112 Rnd4 Malachi Lawrence
They bypassed pressing needs at cornerback, quarterback and other spots to take Malachi Lawrence, an edge rusher that was not the priority.
Pick150 Rnd5 Beau Stephens
Beau Stephens at pick No. 150 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick177 Rnd5 Red Murdock
A premium they did not need to pay, Red Murdock a notch or two before his time. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.

The board fumbled Eric McAlister all the way to No. 215, and they scooped it up. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
