Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall

NeedA-
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Patriots let Watts fall and pounced. Final grade: B. When a board-topper like Xavier Watts slides to pick No. 69, you do not overthink it, and the Patriots did not. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
They will need McLaughlin to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Abdul Carter
In pick No. 4 they get a premier pass rusher. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick38
Rnd2
Luther Burden III
Luther Burden III at slot 38 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick69
Rnd3
Xavier Watts
Circle this one: Xavier Watts at the 69th pick is a fall that decides a draft. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick77
Rnd3
Ozzy Trapilo
Ozzy Trapilo in pick 77 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick106
Rnd4
Chris Paul Jr.
Chris Paul Jr. in No. 106 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick144
Rnd5
Seth McLaughlin
Seth McLaughlin at the Round 5 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick171
Rnd5
Jaydon Blue
Jaydon Blue in the 171st overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick220
Rnd7
Ricky White III
Ricky White III at Round 7, Pick 4 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick238
Rnd7
Dante Trader Jr.
Dante Trader Jr. at pick No. 238 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
