Reed should have been long gone. The Patriots pounced, and earned a B+. Call it larceny. Jaylen Reed sat on the board until pick 238, and the Patriots did not need to be asked twice. The bottom line is a respectable B+.
If Williams pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own.
Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The Tyler Guyton pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Matthew Golden
In slot 12 they get a No. 1 receiver. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick38
Rnd2
Nick Emmanwori
Circle this one: Nick Emmanwori at the Round 2 slot is a fall that decides a draft. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick44
Rnd2
Aireontae Ersery
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Aireontae Ersery. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick69
Rnd3
Deone Walker
Deone Walker in pick 69 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick76
Rnd3
Jayden Higgins
A quiet steal in the 76th overall pick: Jayden Higgins for less than the market said. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick77
Rnd3
Elijah Arroyo
A tidy little value on Elijah Arroyo in pick No. 77, a step better than break-even. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick106
Rnd4
Devin Neal
The board fumbled Devin Neal all the way to the 106th pick, and they scooped it up. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick109
Rnd4
Ozzy Trapilo
Ozzy Trapilo at Round 4, Pick 7 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick132
Rnd4
Jared Wilson
Jared Wilson at the 132nd overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick144
Rnd5
Nohl Williams
Value said wait; Nohl Williams in the 144th pick says they were not listening. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick238
Rnd7
Jaylen Reed
Jaylen Reed at No. 238 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
