FutureA
The Patriots won the weekend at the trade table. Grade: A-. The real work happened on the phones. The Patriots fleeced their trade partners, turning their picks into a noticeably bigger pile than they started with.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman. It is not that Williams is a bad player; it is that the Patriots had louder needs to answer first. Reaching for Milton III left real value on the table behind him.
In the end it comes back to Brian Thomas Jr., and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Brian Thomas Jr.
In the 20th overall pick they get a true top target, reach and all. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick34
Rnd2
Tyler Guyton
Good price on Tyler Guyton in the Round 2 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick51
Rnd2
Xavier Worthy
A straight-up fair deal on Xavier Worthy at slot 51, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick68
Rnd3
Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in No. 68 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick103
Rnd4
Khyree Jackson
Khyree Jackson in the 103rd pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick117
Rnd4
James Williams
A curious use of pick 117. Interior defensive lineman and tight end needed the pick; a linebacker in James Williams did not.
Pick120
Rnd4
Matt Goncalves
Fair-plus on Matt Goncalves, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick137
Rnd5
Justin Eboigbe
Justin Eboigbe at pick No. 137 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick151
Rnd5
Kitan Oladapo
They paid sticker price for Kitan Oladapo in pick 151, and that is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick180
Rnd6
Joe Milton III
Joe Milton III at No. 180 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick193
Rnd6
Daijun Edwards
Daijun Edwards at the 193rd overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
