Best value of the weekend goes to the Patriots for Slaughter: B-. For all the boxes ticked, the Patriots skipped the loudest one: edge rusher is exactly as bare as it was. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
The Slaughter value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. Every board in the league had Lance lower, and that gap is the story.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In slot 30 they get a green-dot type in the middle, outstanding value to boot.
Pick62
Rnd2
Jake Slaughter
Somehow Jake Slaughter was still sitting there in pick 62, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick114
Rnd4
Bryce Lance
A conviction pick on Bryce Lance at the 114th pick that the board grades a round light. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick129
Rnd4
Blake Miller
Blake Miller at No. 129 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick130
Rnd4
Chris Johnson
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Chris Johnson at the 130th overall pick is the proof. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick153
Rnd5
Terrance Carter Jr.
Terrance Carter Jr. at the Round 5 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It fills a real need, too.
Pick191
Rnd6
Zane Durant
They paid sticker price for Zane Durant in the Round 6 slot, and that is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick194
Rnd6
Oscar Delp
Oscar Delp in the 194th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick201
Rnd6
Gracen Halton
They took Gracen Halton at par in pick No. 201, which is nothing to complain about. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick208
Rnd6
Bud Clark
Bud Clark in slot 208 is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick211
Rnd6
Cam Calhoun
They paid a round early for Cam Calhoun in Round 6, Pick 30, more than the board wanted. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick225
Rnd7
Drayk Bowen
By-the-book stuff, Drayk Bowen at pick 225 squarely in line with his ranking. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick246
Rnd7
De'Zhaun Stribling
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on De'Zhaun Stribling. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
