A solid, sensible weekend for the Patriots: B-. If confidence were a draft strategy, the Patriots would have aced it. Shilo Sanders at slot 238 is 49 spots clear of where he belonged.
For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain. Burden III at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
A small leak at the table, if not a fatal one.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick Analysis
Pick17
Rnd1
Emeka Egbuka
In Round 1, Pick 17 they get a home-run threat at receiver, though they paid up to get him. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick38
Rnd2
Luther Burden III
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Luther Burden III at the Round 2 slot. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick49
Rnd2
Aireontae Ersery
They paid sticker price for Aireontae Ersery in slot 49, and that is fine. The roster fit checks out.
Pick69
Rnd3
David Walker
David Walker at No. 69 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick77
Rnd3
Zy Alexander
Value said wait; Zy Alexander in the 77th overall pick says they were not listening. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick81
Rnd3
Cam Skattebo
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Cam Skattebo well ahead of where he belonged. It fills a real need, too.
Pick106
Rnd4
Will Howard
Will Howard in No. 106 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick144
Rnd5
Jake Majors
Jake Majors is a better player than Round 5, Pick 6 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick171
Rnd5
Jake Briningstool
Jake Briningstool at the 171st pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick238
Rnd7
Shilo Sanders
Shilo Sanders at slot 238 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
