Best value of the weekend goes to the Patriots for Lane: B. Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Jaylin Lane got past him. The Patriots do not have to explain a thing at Round 5, Pick 6. The bottom line is a respectable B.
They will regret leaving safety for another day if the season turns on it. Every board in the league had Harris lower, and that gap is the story.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick Analysis
Pick17
Rnd1
Shemar Stewart
In the 17th pick they get juice off the edge. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick38
Rnd2
Kenneth Grant
Value with a capital V on Kenneth Grant in slot 38, a genuine coup. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick49
Rnd2
Tre Harris
Tre Harris at the Round 2 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick69
Rnd3
TreVeyon Henderson
A tidy bit of business in No. 69, where TreVeyon Henderson graded well above the range. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick77
Rnd3
Donovan Jackson
Donovan Jackson slipping to pick No. 77 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick81
Rnd3
Tate Ratledge
Tate Ratledge is a better player than pick 81 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick106
Rnd4
Smael Mondon Jr.
Smael Mondon Jr. at Round 4, Pick 4 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick144
Rnd5
Jaylin Lane
Jaylin Lane in the 144th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
