Draft Grade — Texans
Overall
B+
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesA+
FutureA-
A masterclass at the trade table lands the Texans a B+. There is reaching, and then there is Mikail Kamara at pick No. 70. The Texans jumped the board by 36 and dared it to prove them wrong. A dependable weekend that grades out a B+.
They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. Bowen at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick Analysis
Pick24
Rnd1
Gennings Dunker
In the 24th pick they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick42
Rnd2
Jake Slaughter
A tidy little value on Jake Slaughter in pick 42, a step better than break-even. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick50
Rnd2
Malik Muhammad
A conviction pick on Malik Muhammad at Round 2, Pick 18 that the board grades a round light. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick70
Rnd3
Mikail Kamara
This one needs a full-page explanation: Mikail Kamara in pick No. 70, miles early. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick112
Rnd4
Jadarian Price
Jadarian Price at the Round 4 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick118
Rnd4
Bryce Lance
Bryce Lance in the 118th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick150
Rnd5
Aaron Graves
They went early on Aaron Graves in the 150th overall pick, and the value did not follow. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick227
Rnd7
Drayk Bowen
Taking Drayk Bowen in the 227th pick is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick248
Rnd7
Sawyer Robertson
You do not let a quarterback like Sawyer Robertson reach pick 248 and blink. They did not. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
