The Patriots let Watts fall into their laps, and walked away with a B.

Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Patriots were there to profit. Xavier Watts, the No. 48 name on the board, should have been long gone before Round 4, Pick 4.

They punted on wide receiver, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.

In pick No. 4 they get a ballhawk on the outside. More want than need.
Pick36 Rnd2 Abdul Carter
Steal is underselling it; Abdul Carter at the 36th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick68 Rnd3 Omarion Hampton
Omarion Hampton at the 68th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The roster fit checks out.
Pick83 Rnd3 Tyler Warren
Taking Tyler Warren in Round 3, Pick 19 is close to grand larceny; a tight end that good had no business lasting this long. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick105 Rnd4 Xavier Watts
A safety of that caliber at pick 105 is the definition of value, full stop. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick142 Rnd5 Barrett Carter
They robbed the room for Barrett Carter here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
