The Patriots found their guy under center in McCarthy: B.

The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Patriots spent their marquee pick on J.J. McCarthy, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.

Johnson has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The Richardson steal is the beam this whole class leans on. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

In slot 17 they get a franchise quarterback, though they paid up to get him. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick34 Rnd2 Tyler Guyton
Tyler Guyton in Round 2, Pick 2 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick52 Rnd2 Junior Colson
Fair-plus on Junior Colson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick68 Rnd3 Ja'Lynn Polk
Ja'Lynn Polk at the Round 3 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick96 Rnd3 Dominick Puni
A reasonable price with a little left over, Dominick Puni in pick No. 96. It fills a real need, too.
Pick99 Rnd3 MarShawn Lloyd
MarShawn Lloyd in No. 99 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.

No edge and no loss on Maason Smith in the 103rd overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
