Draft Grade — Patriots

FutureA
The Patriots let Hart fall into their laps, and walked away with a C+. The phones were a trap the Patriots kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal. It washes out to a C+, no better and no worse.
The Hart value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. Reaching for Zinter left real value on the table behind him.
With safety unsolved, spending premium capital on cornerback is the choice that costs them. They punted on safety, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Call it incomplete, and check back in a couple of seasons.
Pick Analysis
Pick15
Rnd1
Laiatu Latu
In the 15th overall pick they get a premier pass rusher. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick34
Rnd2
J.J. McCarthy
J.J. McCarthy at pick 34 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick68
Rnd3
Ruke Orhorhoro
Nice patience on Ruke Orhorhoro, who had no business lasting to the Round 3 slot. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick82
Rnd3
Zak Zinter
Zak Zinter at pick No. 82 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick84
Rnd3
Dominick Puni
Dominick Puni in the 84th pick is fair value, right on his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick104
Rnd4
Malik Washington
Fair-plus on Malik Washington, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick118
Rnd4
Cam Hart
Steal is underselling it; Cam Hart at pick 118 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick136
Rnd4
Chau Smith-Wade
A surprising call. With safety still to address, they spent the 136th pick on Chau Smith-Wade, a cornerback they were not short of.
Pick182
Rnd6
Isaiah Davis
Isaiah Davis in the 182nd overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick229
Rnd7
Jordan Magee
Jordan Magee at pick No. 229 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick238
Rnd7
Trey Knox
No drama and no debate, Trey Knox went about where he belonged in No. 238. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
