SD DRAFTING FOR THEPatriots
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Patriots kept it disciplined and banked a B-. Everything else got attention, and edge rusher got none. That is a strange way for the Patriots to leave a draft.
The Hampton reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. That is an offensive lineman worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. On the needs board they went 7 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Chris Cole
In the 30th pick they get a downhill thumper at linebacker. Need was not the driver here.
Pick62
Rnd2
Bray Hubbard
They did well to land Bray Hubbard in the Round 2 slot, just ahead of his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick94
Rnd3
Ashton Hampton
Ashton Hampton at the 94th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick125
Rnd4
Drake Lindsey
Drake Lindsey at No. 125 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick130
Rnd4
Jordan Marshall
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jordan Marshall. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick168
Rnd5
Lawson Luckie
They took Lawson Luckie at par in Round 5, Pick 30, which is nothing to complain about. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick189
Rnd6
T.J. Moore
Value said wait; T.J. Moore in slot 189 says they were not listening. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick200
Rnd6
Maraad Watson
Maraad Watson at pick No. 200 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick207
Rnd6
Emerson Mandell
No edge and no loss on Emerson Mandell in pick No. 207; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick209
Rnd6
TJ Metcalf
TJ Metcalf at pick 209 is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick246
Rnd7
Charles Jagusah
They read the board right and Charles Jagusah was the payoff at the 246th pick. The roster fit checks out.
