Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B+
ValueB NeedB TradesA+ FutureB-
The Patriots worked the phones like thieves and earned a B+.

The Patriots went off the board in a big way for Sai'vion Jones, 36 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another. More right than wrong, and a B+ to match.

Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. The Carter pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback, running back and other spots still on the board. However the rest shakes out, Carter at that price is a win they earned.

They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.

Pick Analysis
Pick38 Rnd2 Malaki Starks
A quiet steal in the Round 2 slot: Malaki Starks for less than the market said. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick39 Rnd2 Jalon Walker
They let Jalon Walker come to them and pounced at pick No. 39. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick69 Rnd3 Tre Harris
Tre Harris is a better player than pick 69 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick77 Rnd3 Cameron Williams
A slide stopped in the 77th pick, with Cameron Williams worth more than the price. It fills a real need, too.
Pick98 Rnd3 Barrett Carter
A curious use of Round 3, Pick 34. Quarterback, running back and other spots needed the pick; a linebacker in Barrett Carter did not.
Pick106 Rnd4 Sai'vion Jones
Sai'vion Jones in slot 106 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick144 Rnd5 Jonah Monheim
They reached into another round for Jonah Monheim, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick149 Rnd5 Willie Lampkin
They reached a country mile for Willie Lampkin at the 149th pick, and the board is aghast. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick217 Rnd7 Howard Cross III
They took Howard Cross III at par in Round 7, Pick 1, which is nothing to complain about. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
