Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall D+
ValueB NeedB TradesF FutureA
The Patriots lost the trade table, and the D+ tells the story.

The Patriots spent real capital to be 51 picks early on Jalen Travis, and the board is going to hold them to it.

They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. The Schwesinger pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at interior defensive lineman and safety. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.

Walker at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and interior defensive lineman is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick14 Rnd1 Josh Simmons
In slot 14 they get protection for the quarterback. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick38 Rnd2 Emeka Egbuka
The board had Emeka Egbuka higher than the Round 2 slot, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick45 Rnd2 Jalon Walker
Jalon Walker in Round 2, Pick 13 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick69 Rnd3 Jayden Higgins
Jayden Higgins slipping to pick No. 69 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick77 Rnd3 Carson Schwesinger
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Carson Schwesinger adds a linebacker and leaves interior defensive lineman and safety untouched.
Pick90 Rnd3 Darien Porter
Nice patience on Darien Porter, who had no business lasting to pick 90. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick106 Rnd4 Cam Skattebo
They took Cam Skattebo at par in pick 106, which is nothing to complain about. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick144 Rnd5 Kurtis Rourke
Fair-plus on Kurtis Rourke, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The roster fit checks out.
Pick171 Rnd5 Jalen McLeod
A big swing on Jalen McLeod at the Round 5 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick191 Rnd6 Oronde Gadsden II
A straight-up fair deal on Oronde Gadsden II at slot 191, value and slot in agreement. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick220 Rnd7 Isaac TeSlaa
Isaac TeSlaa in the 220th overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick238 Rnd7 Jalen Travis
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jalen Travis in pick No. 238, miles early. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick240 Rnd7 Donovan Smith
Donovan Smith in Round 7, Pick 24 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
