FutureB-
Best value of the weekend goes to the Patriots for Haynes: B. The Patriots spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Justice Haynes, the No. 119 name on the board, in the Round 5 slot. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The Patriots indulged a want in Kilgore while a need in edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots stayed open.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick Analysis
Pick19
Rnd1
Jermod McCoy
In Round 1, Pick 19 they get a press-man option on the boundary at fair value. More want than need.
Pick44
Rnd2
Nyck Harbor
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Nyck Harbor at No. 44 is the proof. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick51
Rnd2
Michael Taaffe
Nothing to complain about; Michael Taaffe went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick76
Rnd3
Caleb Lomu
Caleb Lomu is a better player than pick No. 76 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick83
Rnd3
Jalon Kilgore
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went cornerback with Jalon Kilgore while clear needs at edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots sat open.
Pick112
Rnd4
Sonny Styles
A linebacker of that caliber at the 112th pick is the definition of value, full stop. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick129
Rnd4
Jaden Greathouse
Nice patience on Jaden Greathouse, who had no business lasting to pick 129. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick151
Rnd5
Justice Haynes
Circle this one: Justice Haynes at the 151st overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. The roster fit checks out.
Pick190
Rnd6
Trebor Pena
Value with a capital V on Trebor Pena in pick 190, a genuine coup. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick218
Rnd7
Elliot Washington II
Elliot Washington II at slot 218 is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick225
Rnd7
Aidan Chiles
Taking Aidan Chiles in the 225th pick is close to grand larceny; a quarterback that good had no business lasting this long. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
