More right than wrong for the Patriots, and a B- to prove it. If confidence were a draft strategy, the Patriots would have aced it. Eric Gentry at the 207th overall pick is 58 spots clear of where he belonged. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through tight end. Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. They chose more darts over a bigger single swing.
A fair-value weekend of trading, no edge to be found.
Good work on the whole, with tight end the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Chris Brazzell II
In the 30th pick they get a matchup problem out wide. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick62
Rnd2
Austin Barber
Austin Barber at Round 2, Pick 30 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick94
Rnd3
Caden Curry
Caden Curry at pick No. 94 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick130
Rnd4
Jakobe Thomas
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jakobe Thomas in pick 130. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick158
Rnd5
Rayshaun Benny
This one needs a full-page explanation: Rayshaun Benny in No. 158, miles early. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick168
Rnd5
Bud Clark
Bud Clark in the 168th overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick189
Rnd6
Bryce Foster
A reach on Bryce Foster in pick 189; the board had better options right there. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick199
Rnd6
Jacobe Johnson
They reached a country mile for Jacobe Johnson at slot 199, and the board is aghast. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick200
Rnd6
Joey Aguilar
A premium they did not need to pay, Joey Aguilar a notch or two before his time. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick207
Rnd6
Eric Gentry
Eric Gentry at the 207th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick209
Rnd6
Kamran James
They left a pile of value on the table to take Kamran James this early at pick No. 209. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick246
Rnd7
Roman Hemby
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Roman Hemby well ahead of where he belonged. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick254
Rnd7
Reid Carrico
Reid Carrico at the Round 7 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick257
Rnd7
Zach Rice
A real head-scratcher, Zach Rice in Round 7, Pick 41 is miles ahead of his ranking. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
