Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall
D+
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesF
FutureB-
The Patriots bled value on every deal, hence the D+. The Patriots lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again.
Moore Jr. has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
They will answer for taking cornerback early while edge rusher went begging. The Tate pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick Analysis
Pick28
Rnd1
Carnell Tate
In Round 1, Pick 28 they get a matchup problem out wide, and a steal at that. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick60
Rnd2
Malik Muhammad
Malik Muhammad at slot 60 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick92
Rnd3
Caleb Tiernan
A straight-up fair deal on Caleb Tiernan at the 92nd overall pick, value and slot in agreement. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick123
Rnd4
Chris Johnson
They bypassed pressing needs at edge rusher to take Chris Johnson, a cornerback that was not the priority.
Pick128
Rnd4
Bryce Lance
Bryce Lance at pick No. 128 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick168
Rnd5
Tanner Koziol
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tanner Koziol. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick193
Rnd6
Bud Clark
Bud Clark in pick 193 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick195
Rnd6
Mark Fletcher Jr.
The board had cheaper options than Mark Fletcher Jr. at the 195th pick, and it noticed. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick197
Rnd6
DeAndre Moore Jr.
DeAndre Moore Jr. at slot 197 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick206
Rnd6
Lee Hunter
No edge and no loss on Lee Hunter in the 206th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick242
Rnd7
Diego Pavia
They paid sticker price for Diego Pavia in pick No. 242, and that is fine. It fills a real need, too.
