More right than wrong for the Patriots, and a B- to prove it.

If confidence were a draft strategy, the Patriots would have aced it. Dont'e Thornton Jr. at the 144th overall pick is 29 spots clear of where he belonged. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.

Getting Schwesinger where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.

Pick Analysis
Pick4 Rnd1 Kelvin Banks Jr.
In the 4th overall pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick38 Rnd2 Omarion Hampton
Omarion Hampton at pick 38 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick69 Rnd3 Harold Fannin Jr.
Harold Fannin Jr. at slot 69 is money in the bank, a tight end taken below his worth. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick77 Rnd3 Darien Porter
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Darien Porter. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick106 Rnd4 Carson Schwesinger
They will replay Carson Schwesinger at No. 106 for years; that is how good the value is. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick144 Rnd5 Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Value said wait; Dont'e Thornton Jr. in the Round 5 slot says they were not listening. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick217 Rnd7 Isaac TeSlaa
Isaac TeSlaa in Round 7, Pick 1 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick220 Rnd7 Cam Horsley
A straight-up fair deal on Cam Horsley at slot 220, value and slot in agreement. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick238 Rnd7 Donovan Smith
No edge and no loss on Donovan Smith in the 238th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
