Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall
D+
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesF
FutureC
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Patriots to a D+. The Patriots clearly saw something nobody else did in Lee Hunter, taking him 44 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced. Hard to defend, and the D+ reflects that.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. The Romaine pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with edge rusher still on the board.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Beck.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick Analysis
Pick32
Rnd1
Denzel Boston
In the 32nd pick they get a difference-maker at receiver at a price that makes it sweeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick44
Rnd2
Eli Stowers
Eli Stowers in the 44th overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick53
Rnd2
Gennings Dunker
A conviction pick on Gennings Dunker at slot 53 that the board grades a round light. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick64
Rnd2
Makhi Hughes
Makhi Hughes is a better player than No. 64 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick76
Rnd3
Iapani Laloulu
Iapani Laloulu at pick No. 76 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick90
Rnd3
Whit Weeks
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Whit Weeks at Round 3, Pick 26. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick91
Rnd3
Jack Endries
They went early on Jack Endries in the 91st pick, and the value did not follow. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick96
Rnd3
Tacario Davis
Tacario Davis at Round 3, Pick 32 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick109
Rnd4
Carson Beck
Taking Carson Beck in the Round 4 slot is close to grand larceny; a quarterback that good had no business lasting this long. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick112
Rnd4
Bray Hubbard
They paid a round early for Bray Hubbard in No. 112, more than the board wanted. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick117
Rnd4
Lee Hunter
A wild overpay on Lee Hunter in pick 117, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick121
Rnd4
Evan Stewart
Fair-plus on Evan Stewart, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick129
Rnd4
Austin Romaine
A want over a need in slot 129: Austin Romaine adds a linebacker while edge rusher keeps waiting.
Pick160
Rnd5
Quintrevion Wisner
They paid sticker price for Quintrevion Wisner in pick No. 160, and that is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
