Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall
D+
ValueB-
NeedA-
TradesF
FutureB-
The Patriots bled value on every deal, hence the D+. The Patriots did not so much draft Bryson Nesbit as overpay for him, 43 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. A whole weekend of picks and safety is somehow still a want.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Harris.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and safety is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Abdul Carter
In the Round 1 slot they get a bendy edge with upside. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick38
Rnd2
Emeka Egbuka
Emeka Egbuka slid further than he should have, and slot 38 is lovely value for the wide receiver. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick69
Rnd3
TreVeyon Henderson
TreVeyon Henderson is a better player than pick 69 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It fills a real need, too.
Pick77
Rnd3
Tre Harris
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Tre Harris at No. 77. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick90
Rnd3
Denzel Burke
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Denzel Burke. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick106
Rnd4
Hollin Pierce
A big swing on Hollin Pierce at pick No. 106, well ahead of any board in the building. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick137
Rnd4
Kobe King
They read the board right and Kobe King was the payoff at the 137th pick. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick144
Rnd5
Logan Brown
No drama and no debate, Logan Brown went about where he belonged in pick No. 144. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick171
Rnd5
Vernon Broughton
Vernon Broughton in No. 171 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick220
Rnd7
Isaac TeSlaa
A reach on Isaac TeSlaa in the Round 7 slot; the board had better options right there. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick238
Rnd7
Bryson Nesbit
A real head-scratcher, Bryson Nesbit in slot 238 is miles ahead of his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
