Grand theft in No. 85: the Patriots steal Johnson and grade out a B. Everything else got attention, and edge rusher got none. That is a strange way for the Patriots to leave a draft.
Johnson at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. Every board in the league had Brahmer lower, and that gap is the story.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Will Echoles
In the Round 1 slot they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick52
Rnd2
Nick Marsh
No edge and no loss on Nick Marsh in the 52nd overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick85
Rnd3
Greg Johnson
Greg Johnson in the 85th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick122
Rnd4
Koi Perich
Koi Perich at pick 122 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick125
Rnd4
Dylan Raiola
A reasonable price with a little left over, Dylan Raiola in pick No. 125. It fills a real need, too.
Pick157
Rnd5
Jordan Marshall
No drama and no debate, Jordan Marshall went about where he belonged in Round 5, Pick 20. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick165
Rnd5
Drayk Bowen
A slide stopped in the 165th pick, with Drayk Bowen worth more than the price. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick182
Rnd6
Jayden Virgin-Morgan
A tidy bit of business in pick 182, where Jayden Virgin-Morgan graded well above the range. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick191
Rnd6
Benjamin Brahmer
They liked Benjamin Brahmer enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 191. The roster fit checks out.
Pick205
Rnd6
Mason Curtis
Mason Curtis in pick No. 205 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick211
Rnd6
Christian Alliegro
A conviction pick on Christian Alliegro at the 211th overall pick that the board grades a round light. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick249
Rnd7
Charles Jagusah
They took Charles Jagusah at par in the Round 7 slot, which is nothing to complain about. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick257
Rnd7
Evan Stewart
Evan Stewart at slot 257 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
