The phones sank the Patriots this weekend: D-. Some picks age like wine; Haynes King at Round 6, Pick 19 will need to, sitting 43 spots clear of his grade. The math is unkind, and the D- follows.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Freeling.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, interior defensive lineman very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Jordyn Tyson
In slot 12 they get a go-to option on the outside, though they paid up to get him. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick50
Rnd2
Ar'maj Reed-Adams
Ar'maj Reed-Adams in the 50th overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick76
Rnd3
D'Angelo Ponds
They jumped the gun on D'Angelo Ponds, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick97
Rnd3
Sonny Styles
The board had Sonny Styles higher than No. 97, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick112
Rnd4
Isaiah Nwokobia
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Isaiah Nwokobia at the Round 4 slot. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick129
Rnd4
Monroe Freeling
Steal is underselling it; Monroe Freeling at pick No. 129 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick151
Rnd5
Jonah Coleman
A straight-up fair deal on Jonah Coleman at No. 151, value and slot in agreement. It fills a real need, too.
Pick158
Rnd5
Braylan Shelby
By-the-book stuff, Braylan Shelby at the 158th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick164
Rnd5
Xavier Scott
No edge and no loss on Xavier Scott in the 164th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick165
Rnd5
Jaishawn Barham
A real head-scratcher, Jaishawn Barham in pick No. 165 is miles ahead of his ranking. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick173
Rnd5
J.Michael Sturdivant
A wild overpay on J.Michael Sturdivant in the Round 5 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick190
Rnd6
Malik Hartford
They read the board right and Malik Hartford was the payoff at pick 190. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick195
Rnd6
Haynes King
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Haynes King well ahead of where he belonged. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick218
Rnd7
Lawson Luckie
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Lawson Luckie in slot 218. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick225
Rnd7
Dante Dowdell
No drama and no debate, Dante Dowdell went about where he belonged in the 225th overall pick. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
