Draft Grade — Patriots

FutureA
Good, not great, for the Patriots: B. The Patriots spent real capital to be 56 picks early on Drew Kendall, and the board is going to hold them to it. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
Emmanwori at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
The offense got the lion's share of the attention.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
Josh Conerly Jr.
Value said wait; Josh Conerly Jr. in pick No. 14 says they were not listening. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick38
Rnd2
Tyler Warren
Tyler Warren in No. 38 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick45
Rnd2
Nick Emmanwori
Taking Nick Emmanwori in the 45th pick is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick69
Rnd3
Dylan Sampson
A tidy little value on Dylan Sampson in the 69th overall pick, a step better than break-even. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick77
Rnd3
Ozzy Trapilo
They paid sticker price for Ozzy Trapilo in the Round 3 slot, and that is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick106
Rnd4
Tai Felton
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Tai Felton at slot 106. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick144
Rnd5
Sai'vion Jones
A straight-up fair deal on Sai'vion Jones at slot 144, value and slot in agreement. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick217
Rnd7
Karene Reid
Karene Reid slipping to pick No. 217 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick220
Rnd7
Desmond Watson
Desmond Watson in the Round 7 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick238
Rnd7
Drew Kendall
They talked themselves into Drew Kendall at Round 7, Pick 22, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
