Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B-
ValueC NeedB TradesC- FutureA
No fireworks, just a tidy B- for the Patriots.

You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Patriots did exactly that with Dayon Hayes in the Round 5 slot. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.

That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The future picks help the war chest more than the win-now roster. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.

Pick Analysis
Pick4 Rnd1 Will Campbell
No edge and no loss on Will Campbell in pick No. 4; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick69 Rnd3 Dylan Sampson
Dylan Sampson at pick 69 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick77 Rnd3 Ozzy Trapilo
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Ozzy Trapilo. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick106 Rnd4 Chimere Dike
No drama and no debate, Chimere Dike went about where he belonged in the Round 4 slot. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick144 Rnd5 Dayon Hayes
Dayon Hayes at slot 144 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick171 Rnd5 Jason Marshall Jr.
They reached into another round for Jason Marshall Jr., and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick220 Rnd7 Davin Vann
They reached a country mile for Davin Vann at the 220th pick, and the board is aghast. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick238 Rnd7 Shilo Sanders
A big swing on Shilo Sanders at Round 7, Pick 22, well ahead of any board in the building. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
