Loveland should have been long gone. The Patriots pounced, and earned a B. The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Patriots watched Colston Loveland slide 20 picks past his grade and did not hesitate.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball. Their trades came out a wash either way.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Josh Simmons
In slot 12 they get a blindside protector. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick38
Rnd2
Omarion Hampton
Nice patience on Omarion Hampton, who had no business lasting to pick 38. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick44
Rnd2
Colston Loveland
Taking Colston Loveland in No. 44 is close to grand larceny; a tight end that good had no business lasting this long. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick69
Rnd3
Jayden Higgins
Value with a capital V on Jayden Higgins in the 69th overall pick, a genuine coup. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick76
Rnd3
Cameron Williams
They read the board right and Cameron Williams was the payoff at Round 3, Pick 12. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick77
Rnd3
Andrew Mukuba
Andrew Mukuba at the Round 3 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick106
Rnd4
Zy Alexander
Zy Alexander slid further than he should have, and the 106th pick is lovely value for the cornerback. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick129
Rnd4
Joshua Farmer
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 129, where Joshua Farmer graded well above the range. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick174
Rnd5
Seth McLaughlin
Seth McLaughlin in pick No. 174 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
