FutureA
Good, not great, for the Patriots: B. Nobody else had Tyler Loop anywhere near No. 240. The Patriots did, by 80 spots, and that gap is the whole story.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Shough. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Jahdae Barron
In pick 12 they get a sticky cover corner at fair value.
Pick38
Rnd2
Walter Nolen
They will replay Walter Nolen at slot 38 for years; that is how good the value is. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick44
Rnd2
Tre Harris
Tre Harris in pick No. 44 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick69
Rnd3
Harold Fannin Jr.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Harold Fannin Jr. at the 69th overall pick. It fills a real need, too.
Pick81
Rnd3
Deone Walker
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Deone Walker in Round 3, Pick 17. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick110
Rnd4
Cody Simon
They reached into another round for Cody Simon, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick118
Rnd4
Hollin Pierce
No drama and no debate, Hollin Pierce went about where he belonged in pick 118. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick141
Rnd5
Cam Skattebo
The board fumbled Cam Skattebo all the way to the Round 5 slot, and they scooped it up. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick145
Rnd5
Kevin Winston Jr.
Taking Kevin Winston Jr. in the 145th overall pick is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick154
Rnd5
Oronde Gadsden II
A tidy bit of business in slot 154, where Oronde Gadsden II graded well above the range. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick195
Rnd6
Tyler Shough
Tyler Shough in Round 6, Pick 17 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. The roster fit checks out.
Pick219
Rnd7
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Circle this one: Dont'e Thornton Jr. at pick No. 219 is a fall that decides a draft. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick222
Rnd7
Cobee Bryant
You do not let a cornerback like Cobee Bryant reach No. 222 and blink. They did not. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick240
Rnd7
Tyler Loop
Tyler Loop at the 240th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
